The Australia international was dismissed in the 80th minute of the 2-0 Merseyside derby defeat at Goodison Park for his lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso.
Referee Mike Riley showed Cahill a straight red card, a fact which allows Everton to appeal.
According to TV replays, however, Riley looked set to brandish a yellow card from his back pocket before changing his mind.
After Cahill refused to approach the referee, Riley pulled the red card out with his other hand.
Everton manager David Moyes said: “I don’t think anyone in the ground thought it was a red. I was wondering if it was because Tim walked away when the referee called him.
“I was telling Tim to go to the ref and take his booking. I think a red was the wrong decision.”
According to the club, a hearing will take place later this week at which they are allowed to submit written documentation.
Cahill is facing a three-match ban, starting this weekend against Newcastle, if his appeal is unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Moyes has been told to forget about making a move for Wolves forward Sylvan Ebanks-Blake by counterpart Mick McCarthy.
Everton have been linked with the player who has scored 17 goals in 28 league games since joining the Midlands club from Plymouth.
McCarthy, however, has insisted he has no desire to offload the former Manchester United youngster.
“We don’t have to sell players,” McCarthy said. “The transfer window could be open all year because our best players aren’t going anywhere.”
